The Grand Hotel

I’ll be using this page to post blurbs and media related to my novel The Grand Hotel, published by Skyhorse/Talos in October, 2014.

GrandHotel

“Behold a palace of madness and desire, its crimson corridors home to a gallery of the damned. Kenemore’s novel tours the mysterious recesses of the human soul and what we will do in the name of fear, of love, of vengeance. In the tradition of the great canon of weird tales, The Grand Hotel generates its own dark light, its own cold flames.”

—Laird Barron, author of The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All and The Croning.

“Kenemore has strung a series of enchanting and horrifying stories like dark pearls on the thread of a mystery that leads us onward to an inevitable and totally satisfying end – a masterful voice whispering into the dark. The Grand Hotel is the best book I’ve read this year! Highly recommended.”

— John Hornor Jacobs, author of Southern Gods and The Twelve-Fingered Boy

“With an assuredness that never missteps, Scott Kenemore’s The Grand Hotel intrigues and delights. It’s a book singing with voices—at once charming and bizarre and frightening. It deftly wraps puzzle around puzzle, drawing you deeper into the dark passages and hidden doorways where nothing is as it seems. The Grand Hotel masterfully celebrates the truth and mystery inherent in all great story-telling.”

–Simon Strantzas, author of Burnt Black Suns

“The Grand Hotel is essentially refined shivers from another era. Gothic, funny, even old fashioned…it is a book to be read by the fireplace with your dog (and a big dog is best) who rests loyally and unknowingly at your feet. Imagine the writers of Creepshow hanging out with a tipsy Mary Shelley, a bottle of Absinthe half empty, a rainy day willingly declaring itself.”

–Steven Schlozman, author of The Zombie Autopsies

The Grand Hotel is Scott Kenemore’s best novel to date, hands down. Here he commands a gallery of horrors, and fills his nightmare hotel with the voices of the damned. Every story, every lonely, damaged soul, is another turn deeper into the labyrinthian horror Kenemore has created. This is easily one of the best books I’ve read in the last five years. Powerful and beautifully haunting, The Grand Hotel gets my highest recommendation.”

–Joe McKinney, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Plague of the Undead, and Dead World Resurrection

“The irresistible narrative of The Grand Hotel draws you in and seduces you with its descriptive prose and rich details.  The mystery of the hotel and its inhabitants, and of the story itself, is woven together by unique and captivating tales that display Kenemore’s gifts as a storyteller.”

–S.G. Browne, author of Breathers and Big Egos

Several days after finishing it, I’m still thinking about this book—and discovering clues and layers I hadn’t noticed before.  [. . .]  Already, The Grand Hotel has become a favorite of mine.”

— Joanna Parypinski, author of Pandora

“Truly horrifying. . .”

Black Gate Magazine

“…in this series of clever occult vignettes inspired by a real-life ancient story cycle [. . .] Kenemore (Zombie, Indiana, 2014, etc.) crafts a series of witty, deliciously creepy tales whose larger story arc is built on growing suspense about the fate of one of the hotel’s visitors.”

–KIRKUS Reviews

“Kenemore’s novel is not only well-written, original and magnificently laid out, but it is one of deep insight and leaves readers with a profound sense of compassion.”

–Chicagoist

“Though I absolutely love Kenemore’s previous Zombie State novels, The Grand Hotel is quite possibly the best thing he’s written so far. Perfectly framed within the ancient morals of good and evil, and right and wrong, is a delicious blend of the bizarre, the sad, the funny, and the scary that lies in all of us. Whose story will speak to you, and what will you learn from it? You’ll have to visit The Grand Hotel yourself to find out.”

–The Girl Who Loves Horror

“Dark and foreboding and immensely scary . . . a thrilling Lovecraftian tale.”

— Rue Morgue

“Readers interested in stories within stories, surrounded by secrecy will enjoy their stay at The Grand Hotel.”

–Portland Book Review

“Unique and enjoyable.”

— DrunkenZombie.com

“Welcome to the Grand Hotel where things are never as they seem. And as the Eagles said, ‘You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.’ The horrors that happen every day here are not quite like others; they’re more twisted and incarnate, each with their own bizarre nature.”  [Four star review]

  1. Just finished the book. It was an awesome ride, but after looking at the description on Goodreads, you might consider deleting that first paragraph, where it says the red haired girl might hold the key to unraveling the mystery. “little kid solves mystery” sounds a little too young adult, and doesn’t hint at the atmosphere you create.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Robert. The jacket and Goodreads blurbs are all done by my publisher. I’ll pass along your feedback to them if I get word we are headed for a second printing! Cheers, – Scott

  2. First, I really enjoyed reading your book!
Second, I’m writing a paper about your book and the adaption of the subject matter of Shivadasa’s “The Five-and-Twenty Tales of the Genie” you mentioned in the author’s note at the end of the book. As you said, there are many translations today and I’m very interested which one you used and how you got into contact with this theme.
